Explore Montana

Howdy, Explorers!

Saddle up for our adventure in Montana! You will be exploring Montana and getting to know Joe Misner, an accomplished horseman with over thirty years of experience in training horses. Joe works at Montana Reins of Hope and is dedicated to mustangs. You’ll follow him around the ranch and observe the calm way he gentles mustangs using a specific leadership approach.

Joe helps others practice calm so they can also care for and train wild mustangs. Joe knows that when we (humans) are relaxed and focused, we can be aware of what a horse might be reacting to and thinking. Being a peaceful trainer helps a horse learn, grow, and gain knowledge. And it all starts with us being calm! So, it’s easy to see why calm is one of the five C’s used to be an effective leader for horses.

There are adventures and stories to be discovered everywhere you look. As you learn about Joe’s adventures, remember that life’s adventure moments can sometimes feel rocky, and they often move along with surprising twists and turns.

So, get ready for majestic mountains, gold digging, and wild horses!

Now, what are we waiting for? Giddy up!

Encourage Calm

Joe Misner’s work helps us remember that different emotions can often feel powerful and strong. They can show up suddenly, without warning, and seem to follow us around. When this happens, we can focus on being calm. Calm allows us to quiet our bodies and thoughts so we can push past negative feelings and respond with things like, “I can do this.” Calm also helps us feel more confident when helping and caring for animals, especially wild mustangs.

Meet Joe Misner

Joe Is Calm

Part of Joe’s interest in horses was the thought of becoming a cowboy! As he got older, Joe realized that being a cowboy was more about being a horseman. And to train a horse, Joe learned that first you have to build a relationship. Then he chooses a name that is the perfect fit. Each horse is unique and its name reflects how it responds and what Joe sees for its future. To date, Joe has named well over a hundred horses!

Joe thinks a lot about horses and pays attention to even their smallest movements. He remembers that horses have survived in the wild in a herd, or a group. They need a leader. And when something happens to their leader, they have stepping stones for establishing new leadership. Horses want to protect themselves in the wild and they find this protection in the group. When the wild mustangs arrive at Montana Reins of Hope, where Joe works as a horseman and trainer, he remembers to focus on what the horse needs, including a calm and trusting leader.

With years of experience, Joe believes learning to understand horses is the way to build a foundation for trust and training. Going slow to learn, instead of fast just to meet a goal, helps for further learning.
